Vulnerable Species Conservation at Sable Ranch
Our guests have the privilege of witnessing these magnificent creatures in their natural habitats, learning about the challenges they face, and the crucial role we play in ensuring their survival for future generations.
Sable Antelope
The sable antelope is a large antelope which inhabits wooded savanna in East and Southern Africa. It has a compact build, thick neck, and tough skin. Males are heavier and taller than females, with arching ringed horns. Requiring high levels of calcium and minerals, they have been known to chew bones. When sable antelopes are threatened by predators, including lions, they confront their attackers and fight-back aggressively. Due to habitat destruction some subspecies are classified as Vulnerable to Critically Endangered.
African Rock Python
The Central African Rock Python can eat huge animals like hyenas and antelopes whole due to its strong squeezing and flexible jaws. People are often afraid of big pythons and kill them on sight. Hunting for their skin, poaching for the pet trade, and destruction of their habitat put the Central African Rock Python at risk. It's classified as Near Threatened.
Martial Eagle
The martial eagle is a big eagle from Africa that hunts various animals. It mainly hunts by diving down on its prey from high up. It lives in wooded areas in open grasslands but its numbers have dropped a lot recently. People often try to kill martial eagles because they sometimes hunt livestock and important game. This hunting impact is likely exaggerated. Currently, the martial eagle is classified with the status of Endangered.
Roan Antelope
The roan antelope is a large species in the Hippotragus genus. Known for its horse-like build, it has distinctive grayish brown hair, white facial patches, and long tufted ears. These antelopes live in small herds led by a dominant male, with males often fighting for control using their horns. The roan antelope shares the genus Hippotragus with the extinct bluebuck and the sable antelope, and is a member of the family Bovidae. Some subspecies are are listed as Vulnerable.
Verreaux's eagle
Also known as the black eagle in southern Africa, Verreaux's eagle is a very large bird of prey that hunts rock hyraxes as its main food source. Some people wrongly see them as a danger to small livestock, but the bigger threat is humans hunting rock hyraxes for food and skins, putting the eagles at risk in certain areas where, as a result, they are classified as Vulnerable.
