The lion—regal, untamed, and a symbol of Africa’s wild heart.

At Sable Ranch, they are more than icons; they are living legacies, embodiments of resilience and strength. Yet, behind their majestic presence lies a story of adversity, survival, and a commitment to their future.

As a sanctuary for wildlife and a beacon of conservation, Sable Ranch holds the welfare of its animals as its highest calling. Our lions, rescued from circumstances that threatened their very existence, remind us daily of the delicate balance between protection and freedom.

The Sanctuary They Deserve

Guests often ask, “Why are your lions in enclosures? Isn’t that cruel?”

To answer this is to address a sobering reality. Our lions are not merely enclosed—they are safeguarded. These majestic creatures, once vulnerable to the heinous acts of poaching, now thrive in the secure embrace of Sable Ranch.

In the wild, they would face almost certain death at the hands of poachers. Here, they are free from such threats, their lives preserved and their spirits untamed. Their enclosures, expansive and thoughtfully designed, provide not confinement but sanctuary—a space where they can roam, rest, play, and live as nature intended.

Meet Jabu

Our male lion is a powerful, fully grown adult with a spectacular full mane. His deep roars thrill guests at Bush Lodge and can be heard deep into the ranch.

A Life of Reverence and Care

At Sable Ranch, care is not a routine; it is a philosophy. Our lions, Jabu and Cindy, are treated with the utmost respect, and their needs are met with meticulous attention to detail. These are not domesticated pets—they are wild animals whose dignity and natural instincts are preserved.

Their enclosure borders Bush Lodge, offering guests the thrilling experience of hearing their roars echoing just outside their windows at night. T o protect them from poaching, Jabu and Cindy are housed in a spacious, securely fenced area next to the Bush Lodge Lapa. Guests can observe them up close, marveling at their power and grace, while knowing they are well-protected.

We also ensure our lions are not exploited for breeding purposes. Lions breed very successfully in captivity, and overpopulation is a common concern in wildlife sanctuaries. In this way we ensure the focus remains on their care and quality of life rather than reproduction.

Meet Cindy

Our large female lion is dignified and a little aloof. With a strong instinct to hunt, she is often the first to pounce during feeding time. Guests at Bush Lodge are often serenaded by her roaring duets with Jabu.

Feeding time is a highlight for guests, happening every Saturday and Wednesday at 10:00 am.

Watching Jabu and Cindy during this time offers an unparalleled glimpse into their behavior, strength, and the deep respect they command.

To further safeguard their well-being, strict measures are in place, such as a no-drone policy over their enclosure. This ensures they remain undisturbed by external interference, preserving their sense of security and comfort.

Our lions are fed baboons and impala. Both species are plentiful on Sable Ranch and are the lions’ preferred prey in the wild.

A Voice for the Voiceless

Our lions are more than a testament to resilience; they are a call to action. Their stories serve to educate and inspire, shedding light on the pervasive threat of poaching and the importance of conservation. Through them, we aim to ignite a deeper connection with the natural world and foster a collective responsibility to protect it.
